A healthy udder is the foundation of animal welfare and productivity, and is therefore a key factor in the profitability of a dairy farm. Inflammation of the udder is known as mastitis and occurs when pathogenic microorganisms (mastitis-causing agents = bacteria) manage to penetrate the udder and damage the udder tissue from within.
Mastitis (inflammation of the udder) is one of the most significant occupational diseases affecting dairy cows. Cows suffering from mastitis do not produce milk suitable for human consumption and thus lose their practical value. They also produce significantly less milk than cows with healthy udders and therefore become economically worthless.
